GOD'S WRATH

JUDGEMENT DAY

One of the mighty blessings, bestowed upon us by the Christian revelation, is that we now have certain knowledge of a future state, and of the rewards and punishments, that await us after death, and will be adjusted according to our conduct in this world.  We on whom the light of the Gospel shines, walk no longer in darkness, doubtful of the benefit of good, or the danger of bad actions; we know that we live and act under the eye of our Father and our Judge, by whom nothing is overlooked or forgotten, and who though to try our obedience, he allows in the present state of things, the same events to happen to the good and to the evil, will at last certainly distinguish them, by allotting them different conditions beyond the grave; when it will appear in the sight of men and of angels, how amiable is godliness, and how odious is sin; by the final sentence, which shall bring upon man the consequences of his own actions.

TEMPTATION
TEMPTATION

TEMPTATIONS

There is no reason to wonder, that many enormities should prevail where there was nothing to oppose them.  When we consider the various and perpetual temptations of appetite within; when we see  that on every side there is something that solicits the desires; what can we expect but that those who know of no other world will eagerly make the most of this, and please themselves whenever they can, with very little regard to the rights of others.

HEAVEN
HEAVEN

IMMORTALITY

It was reserved for the preachers of Christianity to bring life and immortality to light.  It is now certain that we are here, not in our ultimate existence, but in a state of probation, commanded to qualify ourselves, by pure hearts and virtuous actions, for the enjoyment of future felicity in the presence of God; and prohibited to break the laws which his wisdom has given us, under the penal sanction of banishment from heaven into the regions of misery.

PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL
PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL

BE NOT DECEIVED

In examining first, how sinners are deceived, it will immediately occur to us that no man is deceived to his damnation but by the devil himself.  The subtleties of the devil are undoubtedly many; he probably has the power of presenting opportunities of sin, and at the same time inflaming the passions, of suggesting evil desires, and interrupting holy meditations; but his power is so limited by the Governor of the universe, that he cannot hurt us without our own consent; his power is but like that of a wicked companion, who may solicit us to crimes or follies, but with whom we feel no necessity of complying; he therefore that yields to temptation, has the greater part in his own destruction; he has been warned of his danger, he has been taught his duty, and if these warnings and instructions have had no effect, he may be said voluntarily to desert the right way, and not so much to be deceived by another, as to deceive himself.

The far greater part of mankind deceive themselves, by refusing to think on their real state, lest such thoughts should trouble their quiet, or interrupt their pursuits.  To live religiously is to walk not by sight but by faith; to act in confidence of things unseen, in hope of future recompense, and in fear of future punishment.

He that is willing to forget religion, may quickly lose it; and that most men are willing to forget it, experience informs us.  If we look into the gay, or busy world, we see every eye directed towards pleasure or advantage, and every hour filled with expectation, or occupied by employment, and day after day passes in the enjoyment of success, or the vexation of disappointment—indifference about eternity.

GAYS MOCK GOD
GAYS MOCK GOD

GOD IS NOT MOCKED

Many men may be observed, not agitated by very violent passions, not overborne by any powerful habits, nor depraved by any great degrees of wickedness;  men who are honest dealers, faithful friends, and inoffensive neighbors; who yet live wholly without self-examination and indulge any desire that happens to arise, with very little resistance; who hardly know what it is to combat a temptation, or to repent of a fault.  They do not reform any vicious practice, or irregular desire.  God is not in their thoughts; they direct none of their actions to his glory, do nothing with the hope of pleasing, avoid nothing for the fear of offending him.  Let them not be deceived, they cannot suppose that God will accept him who never wished to be accepted by him, or made his will the rule of action.

Others there are who, without attending to the written revelation of God’s will, form to themselves a scheme of conduct, in which vice is mingled with virtue, for the continuance of some vicious habit.  But to these men it may, with emphatical propriety, be urged that God is not mocked; he will not be worshiped nor obeyed but according to his own laws.

THE END
THE END

DEATH IS CERTAIN

The mode of self-deception which prevails most in the world is the art, which we are all too apt to practice, of setting the hour of death, and the day of account, at a great distance.

That death is certain, every one knows; nor is it less known, that life is destroyed at all ages, by a thousand causes; even the strong and the vigorous are liable to diseases.  Yet as the thought of dissolution is dreadful, we do not willingly admit it; every living being shrinks from its destruction; as we wish for long life, we hope that our wishes will be granted, and what we hope, we do not examine.  So tenaciously does our credulity lay hold of life, that it is rare to find any man so old, as to not expect an addition to his years, or so far wasted and enfeebled with disease, as not to flatter himself with hopes of recovery.

The man who died yesterday, had purchased an estate, to which he intended some time to retire; or built a house, which he was hereafter to inhabit; and planted gardens and groves that, in a certain number of years, were to supply  delicacies to his feasts, and shades to his meditations.  He is snatched away, and has left his designs and his labors to others.

THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS
THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS

PROMISES OF REPENTANCE

Among the more enlightened and judicious part of mankind, there are many who live in a continual disapprobation of their own conduct, who know that they do every day what they ought to leave alone, and every day leave undone what they ought to do; and who therefore consider themselves, as living under the divine displeasure, in a state in which it would be very dangerous to die.  Such men answer the reproaches of conscience with promises of amendment, promises made with sincerity and intention of performance, but which they consider as debts to be discharged at some remote time.  They neither sin with stupid negligence, nor with impious defense; they fear the punishments denounced against sin, but pacify their anxiety.

Projects of future piety are perhaps not less common, than of future pleasure; and are, as there is reason to fear, not less commonly interrupted; with this dreadful difference, that he who misses his intended pleasure, escapes a disappointment, but he who is cut off before the season of repentance, is exposed to the vengeance of an angry God.

UH OH!
UH OH!

WHAT WE REAP WE SHALL SOW

He who, accused by his conscience of habitual disobedience, defers his reformation, apparently leaves his soul in the power of chance.  We are in full possession of the present moment.  Let us remember that if our lot should fall otherwise than we suppose; if we are of the number of them to whom length of life is not granted, we lose what can never be recovered, and what will never be recompensed, the mercy of God.

WHO IS THE DECEIVER OF MAN?
WHO IS THE DECEIVER OF MAN?

BAD HABITS ARE EASY

Neither is an efficacious repentance so easy a work as that we can be sure of performing it, at the time appointed by ourselves.  The longer habits have been indulged, the more imperious they become; it is not by bidding them to be gone that we can at once dismiss them.

The longer sin has been indulged, the more irksome will be the retrospect of life.  So much uneasiness will be suffered, at the review of years spent in vicious enjoyment.

Neither is it certain that the grace, without which no man can correct his own corruption, when it has been offered and refused, will be offered again; or that he who stopped his ears against the first call, will be vouchsafed a second.  Such presumption is, in some degree, a mockery of God.  How certain it is, that God is not mocked.

God is not mocked in any sense.  He will not be mocked with counterfeit piety, he will not be mocked with idle resolutions; God will not allow his decrees to be invalidated; he will not leave his promises unfulfilled, nor his threats unexecuted.  What he has spoken will surely come to pass.

RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON BY REMBRANDT
RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON BY REMBRANDT

FORGIVENESS

To sow and to reap are figurative terms.  To sow signifies to act; and to reap is to receive the product of our actions.  As no man can sow one sort of grain and reap another, in the ordinary processes of nature; in the final dispensations of Providence, the same correspondence shall be found in the moral system; every action shall at last be followed by its due consequences; we shall be treated according to our obedience or transgressions; the good shall not miss their reward, nor the wicked escape their punishment; but when men shall give account of their own works, they that have done good shall pass into everlasting life, and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.

Let us therefore at this, and at all times, most heartily and fervently beseech God to give us faithful and sincere repentance, to pardon and forgive us all our sins, to endue us with the grace of his holy spirit, and to amend our lives according to his holy will and commandments.

YOU CAN HAVE ETERNAL LIFE
YOU CAN HAVE ETERNAL LIFE

SAMUEL JOHNSON

This is part of a sermon written by Dr. Samuel Johnson in the middle of the Eighteenth Century. I have shortened it considerably for brevities sake. He based this sermon on Galatians 6:7

Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he reap.

I have previously used other sermons by Dr. Samuel Johnson in four of my Hubs:

Dr. Johnson

This Life Is Short

Walk That Lonesome Valley

King Solomon

STATUE OF DR SAMUEL JOHNSON
STATUE OF DR SAMUEL JOHNSON

DR JOHNSON

Dr. Samuel Johnson was the greatest intellectual, as well as the eminent literary critic, in the history of England. His preternaturally sublime achievement—indeed unsurpassed in the history of world scholarship—was the Dictionary of the English Language, which he published in 1755.

Dr. Johnson created many aphorisms that are widely quoted today, e.g., " 'Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open one's mouth and remove all doubt." Dr. Johnson also wrote dozens of sermons. He was not a preacher. It was not uncommon in those days for high-profile ministers to have a professional write his sermons.

Good morning James,

Thank you for this. It is both thought provoking, insightful and illuminating.

I read the previous ones..of Dr. Johson and King Solomon and Life is short. They point the way, albeit much too much of an intellectual expose.

May you shine as a light for others.

Well, there is no other word but "Amen." More than well done. It appears you believe the whole Bible rightly divided...God is not mocked and He will have His day with the those who mock Him, because the Bible says that "every eye shall see and every hear shall hear." Hopefully it will not be too late. This is a wonderful message.

What I find interesting in reading this is that the good Dr Johnson is certain that he is right, and certain that he knows God's will. Yet he was one who courted controversy, while never allowing for the possibility of being on the wrong side of any issue. And why should he, when he was supremely gifted in formulating a devastating argument for his cause? Like many persuasive writers, he possessed in abundance the skill of persuading himself. Of course he was a genius, like Chesterton later, but was he right, or merely persuasive? The fact that it is possible to disagree with much that he says is reason enough for saying he was not entitled to keep asserting 'it is certain that...', because, you know, it is no such thing!

On a less serious note, I'd change the 'Temptation' picture for someone more Asiatic - apple-bearing blondes don't work for me ;)

James,

Excellent reading ! It seems evil is escallating. Do you believe in the Rapture? Thanks for the good read and something to think about. For those that don't believe. Please consider Jesus... Hell is real

The Bible says:

John 12:40 (New King James Version)

40 “ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,

Lest they should see with their eyes,

Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.”

Also another scripture verse comes to mind:

2 Timothy 4:3 (New King James Version)

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;

Some are in heaven some are not. The rest are in hell and that too will pass. The concept of GOD is beyond our comprehension. Man has for centuries made attempts to describe him but words have always failed and will continue to fail. Religion presents a serious threat and a glamorous reward. Is mankind after the reward or does he fear the threat?

"Quill" 2 years ago

Great Hub James as we approach a time where our faith in Him and Him alone become paramount. We do seek His will in our lives and when we see our Father mocked in the ways of the world we find it upsetting and yet let us remember we are His children.

The more Christ is proclaimed the more He as well as ourselves will be ridiculed, when I think of the many who traveled the pilgrimage before us, I can not help but praise the Father for the road He traveled to grant us the privilege to stand and be counted. He will judge...He will.

James:----"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man". Despite protests, debates or dissertations to the contrary, Jehovah God was here before our tent's were pitched and He will be here long after our tent's are struck.

James, there are going to be a lot of unsuspecting people on their faces, prostrate before God, at the Great White Throne Judgment.

It is our job to point as many of them to Jesus as we can before then, by loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves.

James, it is because we know that God is not mocked that we do not concern ourselves unduly with the behaviors of the unbelieving world. We strive to live the Christian life before it, be obedient to the will of God as we understand it, and proclaim His saving message using the tools He supplies.

Thank you for sharing a portion of Samuel Johnson's thoughts with us.

A good piece for reflection! You may lend your brother a hand, you may keep on returning to support him, you may share all the good things in order to "open" the spiritual eyes of such brother, but you may not act on his behalf or force him to believe. That´s something he ought to do himself!

Interesting!

Ah, the "modern-day Boswell" speaks again. I find Johnson's assertions that he "is certain" quite refreshing. Not because I agree with everything he says, but because he enjoyed the power of his convictions, thus making himself a force to be reckoned with. The "luke-warm spit" of most people's minds today is an atrocity and probably has Johnson turning in his grave.

It is so refreshing to read your intelligent articles James. They are balm to the mind and soul. I have truly been wasting my time in the forums.

James, all I could think of when I started reading this was Hebrews 11:24-25 'By faith, Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of the Creator, than to enjoy the pleasure of sin for a season.' The Lord is not mocked, and that is exactly why there is a penalty of death followed by a judgment. All the evils and mockery are only for a season. They may seem like long seasons to us, but to the Lord, a thousand years is as a day, and their foolishness is but a meager blip. We either believe in an afterlife and start sowing and planting for it now, or, when it comes, we will find nothing there to reap. Peace.

Hi james

As an Irish poet & writer living in Ireland I see alot of Gods beauty mared by mans darkness.

I feel you have the potental to be very poetic and feel you should concider trying it. I use words to relay thoughts and beliefs. I have a condition that allows me to see sound as colour and words as colour also. So I listen to certain music when writing poetry and convert it into words formed through emotions. In a way painting my inner thoughts using writing.

I grew up thinking everyone seen colours when they heard music but was to learn that that isnt the case. I am mildly autistic and find it in someways difficult to relate to others. Yet I can do this with poetry. I see alot in your words and understand alot of your level and pattern of thought. It is a nice place where you reside with many colours and interwoven trusts and acceptances with nature and its creator.

I would like to live in such a place someday and have the assurance that you have. I seem to be unable to get there because I feel many conflicts in regard to God. I hope someday that I will not be so ignorant and maybe will understand faith and trust in an unconditional way.

best regards

But those who beleive in all mighty would not listen to them. My closet friend has his own faith in god which is not shared by any of us and he can relate to him like he would relate to his anyother friend and would fight him and everything but we all try to make him beleive he is wrong and he should be thankful ot god rather than thinking him to be his equal.

"It is a nice place where you reside with many colours and interwoven trusts and acceptances with nature and its creator. I would like to live in such a place someday and have the assurance that you have."

I read these sentences with great pleasure and I sincerely hope you get to this place. It is great to hear from you, Colin. I am going to read some of your work soon.

Concise and direct as ever, James.

quicksand wrote: "The concept of GOD is beyond our comprehension. Man has for centuries made attempts to describe him but words have always failed and will continue to fail."

Absolutely! That's why we acknowledge the Holy Bible as the directly inspired revelation of God himself, because no-one else is more qualified to reveal the heart of God than the Holy Spirit.

The title is good, but you miss Paul's positive corollary in the context in which we find it, in Galatians 6:6-9.

'One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.'

Paul is not merely warning of God's punishment of sin, but assuring his readers that God never misses the good that we do, nor fails to reward generosity.

That we're going to die is a given, and that those who have rejected God's only lifeline to forgiveness - Jesus Christ - will not escape judgement was affirmed by Jesus himself in John 3:18.

thanks for sharing James. You sound like an old fire and brimstone preacher. Scare the hell out of them. The old time preachers seem so much more eloquent than today's. I think it has to do with more reading and studying and less TV. A lot of preachers today don't want to offend anyone.

You know I am with you.

Thank you for fleshing out Paul's message. That is a great addition to this message. Yes, God has incredible awards awaiting those who obey Him.

James this was a very insightful message. I knew all this but I needed to be reminded. It's easy to get caught up in this world and the things it can offer. That's why we need to be faithful and study his words so that when the temptations of this world are trying to lure you in, it will be alot easier to walk away from them.

Awesome work, and fantastic photographs that are so colorful and interesting. I will be reading this more than once to savor the pleasure of it. I also like the girl in TEMPTATION. I am a real push over for lip locking kisses and Temptation. I figure there is plenty of time later for confessional moments unless I get greased by a semi tractor trailer while jay walking to cross the highway for our newspaper. God Bless You .

Wonderful hub and I was waiting as I had the same question as newwoman53 to see your answer. As a very young wife and mother of two young babies I first learned of the tribulation and literally cried my eyes out for days learning of the great tribulation, knowing I could see my children dashed to pieces before my eyes, well I was pretty uneducated in the Bible. I could not believe this of my God and He has always delivered His before sending his wrath, but finally He showed me, seeing that there will indeed be a rapture, allowing anti-Christ to be revealed(because he could fool even the elect if it were possible , scriptures tell us) then was the most wonderful time of my life and got me into a deep study of the Bible. I know there are pre, mid, and post tribulationist, I think pre is possible but lean more toward mid, but I know our God will not bring wrath on His own (how many examples do we have, such as Noah, Sodom and Gomorrah, we may and do see it starting, who knows but what is has, but I have no more fear, I trust God completely to deliver me, even knowing I don't deserve except through Christ of which I am part of His body and waiting for the sound of His trumpet at any time. I am sorry if have said more than you would have wished me too, but this was a life changing experience in my life and I don't try to teach or preach, just had to say how I know what I know.

Pollyannalana--- Right. Yes. I agree with you that God's Elect will be spared from His wrath, by His grace. You have nothing to be sorry about. I enjoyed reading your comments. Feel free to comment all you want. I am always pleased to hear from a Godly woman. Lord knows we need more women like you. Thank you very much.

I didn't realize I had been here but God must have sent me to see at least one if not more here trashed me and Jojo and called God a liar saying homosexuality is no sin. Don't worry, today I had about my last say on that if God will let that be. I know they are out there because people are people but I do not know of one gay I hated and in fact indeed really liked being so tender and feeling as all men should be but Christians must believe God's words and never ever call Him a liar or anyone carrying His word. No... God will not be mocked and he will not forget the ones so called Christains have set a war against. Thay walk on dangerous ground. Thank you and may God bless all who will not back down from the truth.

Polly— Thank you for coming back. It has been a while since you visited this Hub.

I know a few people who enjoy homosexual behaviors. I do not treat them any differently than anyone else. I would assist them equally under the same circumstances and extend the same courtesies. They know what I think of their behavior. Once they know and I know they know and they know I know that they know—I don't mention it again.

You are most welcome, my dear. I appreciate your ongoing encouragement. God Bless You.
