My Home is the Oldest House in Orlando

VICTORIAN HOMES
I live in the oldest home in Orlando, Florida. It is a Victorian style house with gables, dormers, and a large wrap-around porch. The "Princeton House" was built in 1882. It remains its original color: pink. Another Hubber made a request of me to write a Hub about my home.
John P. Erricsson, a veteran of the American Civil War who had served directly under General-in-Chief of the Union Army, Ulysses S. Grant, was rewarded with a federal land grant of 500 acres on Lake Ivanhoe in 1875 by then President Grant. On this land he built the Princeton House at a cost of $1300. This parcel of land was close to the South Florida Railroad line. A small village named Formosa was 1/4 mile away and featured a train depot, a post office, and a saloon or two.
OLD HOUSES
It was built as a farmhouse out of timbers of heart pine, and the land was used for orange and grapefruit groves. It still has the original wide, pine plank floors and two fireplaces. Situated as it is in Orange County, Erricsson was well positioned to take advantage of the citrus boom that exploded in those days. After Mr. Erricsson died the home was sold at public auction for $1,853.28 on December 9, 1884.
The next year the new owner, Charles Joy, subdivided the land, leaving this house sitting on 14 acres. The "big freeze" of 1895 ruined the orange crop and the owner of the orange grove, resulting in the property being foreclosed. There are records of several other foreclosures of the property for the same reason, making it appear that farming oranges was a risky business.
ORLANDO REAL ESTATE
The land was further subdivided in 1923 by then owners, J. C. & Martha Johnson, and the Princeton House made due with 4 or 5 acres—and no orange groves. In 1927, the Johnson's daughter, Jessie Cone, inherited the property and successfully sued the City of Orlando to pave the street and install a sewer line. She then installed indoor plumbing in the house for the first time, and also renovated and remodeled. It was sold in again in 1949 and since has had numerous owners.
A few years ago my wife and I decided to build an addition onto the home, doubling its size. The rooms in the old section are small; she uses the house for her business; and in the midst of the real estate boom it seemed like a wise investment. Our neighborhood is in the midst of gentrification. This addition precludes the house from historical designation.
MY HOUSE
I have included a photograph of the house from 1927; and a picture from 2000, prior to the construction of the addition; and a number of pics from 2005 just prior to moving into the addition. The addition was made to duplicate the exterior while making the interior rooms large, including a great room where now hangs our art that I have reviewed in four previous Hubs: "Beauty is the purpose of Art" "Rembrandt is my favorite Artist" " "Art in my Home" and "Fine Arts."
This proved to be a complicated engineering project and we were blessed that it was designed and the construction managed by Scott Raymond and Joyce Phipps with their firm Architectural Dynamics of Orlando. Scott is known as ArchDynamics in the Hub Pages Community. The work was completed in 2005 by General Contractor Mike Vecchio.

James,
One of these days I will get to your hub first, but not today. So you are in Orlando. You and your wife are blessed to live in such a glorious home with such rich history. Here's wishing you the best and that you will enjoy every minute. Thank you for sharing with us.
Thank you for the history of an historical building. You are blessed to live there.
My brother is an architect, and we used to visit many of the houses that he built.
I have visited many historical sites including Windsor Castle, Edinburgh Castle and I loved Monarco Palace, especially looking from the waterfront.
Spectacular! It is a dream home for an artist or art collector, like yourself. We are currently looking for a house with lots of walls and spaces, and the timing seems right. I would LOVE to find one with historical value, aesthetics,e.g columns, high ceilings...You are blessed James!
James,
Enjoyed looking at all the pictures. I remember the home prior to and after all the construction was finished. I am sure it looks great with all the artwork in place. Thanks for sharing.
How wonderful to live in a house that whispers history from every nook and cranny!
I loved this and your home. We are all coming to live with you. lol
Beautiful style of homes. Hubby and I love to see these type of homes in American films etc. It is how we imagine them to be. Very posh though James.
The oldest house in all of Orlando? Wow. Thanks for sharing the pics. The house is beautiful.
James, Remember a few months back when you invited Cindy & myself to spend the night? Well as we lay there in the upstairs bedroom that night we had a discussion about how old that section of your house is & who might have slept in that room (or died in it) LOL. If those walls could talk we'd probably be told a wealth of history & information. Well we're both alive so if there are any ghosts they must be friendly. Gotta get together with you soon. We're letting too much time pass again.
Danny
Absolutely Gorgeous! I love historical homes. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of your lovely home. What a blessing! The bathroom is fabulous. And what person wouldn't love that huge closet. Chandeliers ... goodness, the ceiling was incredible. I love Orlando ...don't get there as often as I would like. Blessings to you!
James,
What a beautiful home. You are so lucky to live surrounded by such history. Thank you for sharing it with us. Do you have a library? I've always wanted a big library with a fire. I've now got a study and more books than I know what to do with!
Thank you again.
AWESOME!
Now this is something even I might be able to LOVE, you do remember don't you?
Nice house master, but what car is this one in the corner of the 7th picture?i think its something good?
James...awesome home. I worked on and in many old mansions in Nashville. The craftsmanship alone is really something to ponder. I asked myself many times "How did they get that to look so perfect?" Great hub.....thanks for the tour! :)
James, thank you for inviting us, your home is beautiful. I especially love the floors. I'm fortunate to live in the historic section of Jax, called Avondale, where each home is lovelier than the next. Again, thank you, and looking forward to seeing the art walls.
James, great
I owned a new england victorian, wrap around porch house had a turret too.
I love architecture, my deceased wife and I built our current home, a reproduction of a 1780 Georgian era colonial from Portsmout NH, The Governor Langdon Mansion.
You can see the NH house on line by going to the web site: Historic New England
The Shark
James thank you for the tour . I love older architecture It has so much personality . Totally enjoyable !
Wow, I love your home but then I'm a sucker for older-style houses too. Thanks James.
your home is very beautiful, i am certain it brings much enjoyment. be blessed
Your home is beautiful. I love large rooms, I need space, open space, and your home clearly has alot of that. Very nice. Oh and the chandeliers are just beautiful!
Victorian homes have great charm and personality. Just one tiny litte thing...you need flowers, lots of flowers outside. Landscaping. You will have to read my next hub on Gardens... : )
James, This is something we have in common in a BIG way. Awesome, Beautiful.....history!!!!! I really like this hub! GPAGE
You have the best of both worlds...the old authentic Victorian house and the new adjacent modern living space right next door. Lovely! You had good architects. The exteriors flow and blend well together. It was fun getting this peek into your home. Thanks.
13 is a good number according Jewish numerology.
Reflections of windows in the floor are impressive! Who polished the floors so nicely?
I love old houses and if I see one I take a picture. There is one house in a town where I live, an old Victorian house, more that 100 yo. Pink with light blue framings outside. When I win a lottery I'll buy this house and make toys museum with play rooms in it.
Thank you so much for opening your doors for us!
What a cool house....plus an interesting history. And beautiful interior, too (we are still renovating, definitely, inside). It sure is pink, though ;), huh? You should really stop by Sufi's pages to see his Greek pink house (we spawned house hubs off of each other).
Thank you for writing this, :)!
It is magnificently beautiful!!! I love the history of homes, older ones certainly have a story to tell. It was designed exquisitely, high ceilings and pillars. What a charming place thank you for sharing your home with us. It is o.k. if it is Pink you did not take away from its original beauty and charm.:)
James, it is so cool to live in the oldest house in town! And what a beautiful, unique home! Older homes are just so interesting aren't they? Just the kind of place I'd expect someone like you to live in.
Thanks for the pictures and the wonderful history of your house James. Victorian style homes are my favorite as well, your addition blends perfectly with the original structure.
I love Victorian Homes. They have always been my favorite. By the way, Grant is my Great....Uncle! Take good care of the house :) It looks beautiful and the additions are terrific! Your art is in a perfect setting!
Wow! James, now that's exquisite! A house with so much history, fine arts and music! You are definitely blessed. Thanks for sharing your great taste with us.
I love victorian homes, they have so much character and the workmanship details are breathtaking. My grandmother lived in a colonial home and I could spend hours just appreciating the woodwork and intricate details. Not to mention the hours spent just sitting on the wrap around veranda and looking at the rolling hills and valley below. (Some day I must write a hub about that)
Thanks for sharing. Enjoy my friend!
Very interesting to have a little peek into your home, James. It is very nice.
Your home is incredibly beautiful and I feel instantly inspired.I would love to paint your home! No kidding.
As always I am touched by your elegant being.
Wow...I have an idea...I will get back to you about it.
Thank you for your hospitality.
By the way...thanks for the spell check.
Love the home James. Steeped in a rich history. A great addition to the home. Nothing like striving for excellence in what was provided for you to steward. Thanks for opening your home to us.
James, I fell in love with the old house as soon as I walked into it the day your lovely wife interviewed me for BIO. It was beautiful as is back then, the addition is phenomenal. I never would have thought it possible to blend old and new so well. The architect is great. I saw your terminal when my father, a doctor, left on one of your planes to New Orleans to help out after Katrina. You and Nancy are the best for the work you do. How Hercules?
WOW!!! YOU GO JAMES!!!! Beautiful home, what a blessing!!!!!!! I am blessed by even knowing you!!!!!!
Ulysses S. Grant was my Great, Great, Great Uncle my mother has told me. I think I have the number of Great's correct! I always thought that was kind of neat in an historical way.
Thanks for the Hubs you write. I appreciate all of the information you put out for everyone. Especially the accuracy in all of them. You must spend a lot of time researching!
James and the lovely Dr. Kenyon do us too much kindness ...
We can't think of a couple who was more pleasant and enjoyable to work with on a project. You and Ms. Nancy were always positive, decisive, pro-active and available.
You always made us feel like welcome guests in your home and we enjoyed the challenge. A you know, we are primarily Commercial Architects, so having the opportunity to work on something a bit more personal for good friends was a delight.
Like we always say, the house is so well-engineered that when the next hurricane comes through, we're coming to stay at your place for the duration.
We'll bring the wine, you fire up the flat-screen!
I have not read Grant's autobiography but now that you have brought the subject up I think I will do that. I just never though of reading about him before. I think it might be interesting especially since he is a distant relative! I have to go to Occupational and Physical therapy tomorrow (I had a mild stroke last week) and it is close to the Library so I will go see If they have it! Thanks for the idea!
Absolutely STUNNING! I would love to restore a Victorian home. Wise decision on the addition where the historical guidelines are concerned. You and your wife did an awesome job! Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

beautiful house.

If so, congratulation :)
Terrific! Katie and I had one built in 1896 very hard to explain what it is like to live in a house with that kind of history.
Wow!! Beautiful House.
Nice to see your Hub!! wonderful place!
Thanks for exciting photos...
I came here today and your words were exactly what I needed to hear. Warm thoughts and love to you too.

Wow what a great place! It is lovely to live in a house with some history. When I lived in the UK (about 12 years ago now) we lived in a 200 year old cottage. Of course 200 years is nothing to the Brits so it was hardly regarded as old. But it was nice to feel that life had been going on there for such a good long time before me. It was just a cottage though - nothing as elegant as your home which is truly spectacular.
I love the older type houses they have so much more personality than most of the modern ones. Thanks for opening your home to us and for posting all those lovely photographs I have so enjoyed my virtual tour and the tour guide was so gracious and knowledgeable l loved hearing about some of the history of the house and the area.
Lovely home. Old but beautiful. With all the history with it, I guess it's like living in a museum, and of course the great paintings and the artistic people living in it add up the glamour. =)
What a great home! I also really like the new addition and the marble bathroom, pocket ceilings, chandeliers, pillers, arches and mucho closet space. We live in a "new" home designed by us but built by Ruttenberg at Tildens Grove two years ago and can appreciate your love of this historic home. It must bring you great joy and satisfaction to live in this home - you've said as much. Kind of like you're soaking up inspiration from the past for your artistic and writing endeavors. Keep up the fine work.

Your house is absolutely gorgeous! It must be great being surrounded by so much history. Thanks for inviting us into your home. What time is Christmas dinner??
So you have something old, and something new:) This is so beautiful. The addition looks like a gallery! I love old homes, they have so much warmth to them, like you are at grandma's house:) Another Great Share, James!
A really wonderful hub with great pictures James, I'd love to live somwhere like this. Fantastic hub
What a beautiful home James and full of history
Amazing house and features you have there. How does it feel to live in such a historic dwelling?
Lake Ivanhoe, College Park, the Orlando Science Center, and I could never forget Florida Hospital (2 children), Lake Eola by the Orlando Public Library--oh my, I'm a long way from "home." Silver Star Road to Eatonville's history, Rollins College atmosphere to Turkey Lake, nothing ever stays the same does it?
You've given much to the beautiful house yet retained it's pink character, and you've added to its history. May the wonderful memories of your home be a blessing to your future.
Pilgrims...on a journey...a blink and the vapor passes...passing through this world to eternity...praise God...continuing to learn to be more like Him and be faithful to His Name and Word as we travel...may we keep our hands open before Him, letting go of the temporal to receive the eternal.
I just opened HP to find a note that you had left a comment on this article. Since the only thing that matters is that we are centered on Him, it doesn't matter that they did not give me credit for the comment. :)
Well! I am too registered! How dare they...oh, how our pride can get the best of us.
I have always loved these homes, I have know quite a few people who live in some here not as old as yours. Since Oregon is one of the last States in the country to be added, homes were not here yet but when they came they came by the dozens. We have some towns just full of these old victorian beauties. I just know you will always be happy there, everybody I know who lives in them is. Homes with a history, are usually a very interesting and exciting place to live, from what I'v seen so far. Love your photo's of the house, and I miss Florida now. You live in a truly beautiful State, I will most likely visit it again I liked it so much.
Dear James. Godd morning , and God Bless You. Awesome hub. Sorry I am 20 months late in visiting it. Your home is awesome. Wonderful hub.
Wow, such a beautiful home.
James A Watkins, This is fascinating history behind your home and it truly look comfortable. Those wood floors are awesome.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing! Now I have to ask, and confess that I couldn't read all of the comments prior to this writing so it may be a repeat question for you, any Hauntings?
Wow!
Looks like you might have room in that house for about 100 uncared for children. That would put some strength behind your other words.
