God the Creator
I find that much of the skepticism regarding God as the Creator of the Universe is the result of misunderstanding what science has discovered about the cosmos in which we exist. The Copernican Principle is a mistaken conclusion drawn from the Copernican Revolution. The Earth is the center of God's Universe regardless of the fact that it is not the center cosmologically. To understand this, we must first come to grips with the difference between Earth and any other place in our Universe.
Rare Earth
The Universe is utterly hostile to life. We have searched the heavens at minimum 13 billion light-years away (that would be 78,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles away if I calculated correctly) without finding any evidence of any Life anywhere else whatsoever . (Some say this distance is really 42 billion light-years.) Meanwhile, the Earth is teeming with an incredible array of Life with more than two million species named by science thus far—having just scratched the surface. The Earth itself is a Living Organism with a heartbeat. This ought to tell something important to any thinking person.
What are the scientific facts that tell us how rare the Earth is? Mostly, these have to do with how perfectly God designed the Earth and placed it in the Universe. There would be no Earth filled with Life if any of the following were changed by one to five percent (at the most): The magnetic field; the size and proximity of the moon; the size of Earth itself; the size of the Earth's crust; the level of oxygen and nitrogen; the temperature; the atmosphere and atmospheric pressure; and our distance from the sun.

Slime or Design
Those who believe in the Copernican Principle fail to see that Earth is the perfect observatory for human beings to view the heavens. On no other planet we have found does there exist the combination of "coincidences" that provides us with a clear view of the Universe, including the chromosphere of our Sun and flash spectrums, as well as solar and lunar eclipses. Why such a great view from Earth? God is granting us knowledge of the heavens so that we might see His glory.
Please consider that there is not one person who is living now; who has in the past; or who will live in future with the exact DNA blueprint that created YOU—unless you are an identical twin. Some scientists estimate that well over 100 trillion humans have lived on this planet. However many there have been, you are unique among them. There has never been anyone exactly like you and never will be. So what do you think? Are you up from primordial slime or did God the Creator design you and the Universe you exist in at this moment? And if He did design you: What for? For a reason and a purpose of His. God did not create humans capable of discovering all of this astonishing scientific knowledge so we would turn into atheists and make man God. God is granting us scientific knowledge so we might glimpse His Glory and praise His Name.

Big numbers don't make a case, that have no facts.
Even life on Earth is not in the form of humans, so to say there is no other life in the universe is not valid.
You have your beliefs and I don't want to change them.
Faith and Intelligent Thought have no natural bridge connecting them.
Any Creator that is going to take credit for the Earth today, should be ashamed of it. This is not a shining example of success. It never has been and it doesn't look like that will ever change.

To say that faith and intelligent thought have no bridge between them is, well, pardon me for saying so: ridiculous. Having read books or writings by men of great faith such as C.S. Lewis; Kirkegaard; Sir Isaac Newton; Francis Schaeffer; Os Guinness; Augustine; William Wilberforce; Dr. Johnson—to just name a few of the top of my little pointed head—I think a conclusion that these men had no intelligent thought is nonsensical. Let's be for real.
You may note that I never said the Creator is proud of the Earth as it is—in the hands of the human race He granted free will to make of it what they will. If anybody should be ashamed it is us.
We are only as good as our creator made us.
Remember, even the Angel didn't all turn out good, and we are certainly not Angels.

A defect in design causes the product to fail.
We have no idea who created the Angels or maybe you do, in any case they have problems and they aren't human. The nature of humans appears to be counter of what you say God expected of us.
Most of the violence and deaths in the world today are the result of religious differences. That alone is ironic, killing in the name of their God.

If we were merely products we would be robots. Humans are much more—you know that. We have free will, sir. Free will—get it?
"Nature itself does teach there is a higher power" All we have to do is look around us and see the beauty and magesty we are surrounded by and know that none of it happened by chance. God, in all his infinite glory, chose to put us on his planet and we should all feel privledged to be a part of such a wonderful creation. No disrespect, would it not be arrogant and selfish to say this universe is "only" for us? If you believe in God, you believe "all" is possible? If all is possible, how can you rule out "other" life. The airplanes we build can be destroyed by a single bird. Do you think we have the capability of studying every planet in the universe?
marinealways24- God made each of us for a specific reason or purpose but does not force us to fulfill that purpose. We have to decide to choose our own path or His path.
If I may be the observer of the obvious—there are many things we will never understand on this side, in this vale of tears. Unless we are referring to natural disasters, most innocents die at the hands of other men. The reason for natural disasters might be to remind us how fragile life is, in the hopes we will do something with our lives while we have the opportunity.
The reason for suffering is that we learn lessons through suffering that we learn no other way.
As far as innocents dying, I must ask, "Who is innocent?"
Anyway, we all die, innocent or not. It is a question of when. Considering the span of time our human race has been on the earth, the number of years one person lives is overblown in our shallow perspective.
I think how long we live is not as important as what did we do while we were alive.

Innocent = Healthy mother having a healthy baby that dies at 2 weeks old. Crack head mom having 5 kids with a healthy mom being infertile? Did God favor the crack head mom over the healthy mom? How about a man in jail who has just died from lethal injection? Lets say this man was convicted and killed when he was really innocent of the crime. Do you have a theory on these things?

There are no scriptures or documents that give you or anyone else any idea why the Earth needs billions of people. And then to contend that God has a plan for each of them.
People are no different today than they were 4000 years ago.
Human nature is a design defect, where the normal condition is weighted towards the bad side.

If God's plan was to have Hell on Earth, then the plan is working very well.

You ask excellent questions. I can't say I have a strong insight into these things that trouble you (and most everybody else). God says he causes rain to fall on the wicked and the just and the sun to shine on the righteous and the not-so-righteous. So, all people receive some blessings in life—in addition to life itself. And all people experience hardship, too. But none of us suffers as much as Jesus did.
The hardest to understand is why a little baby would die. That is a good question that I don't have a ready answer for.
Maybe God sees that the baby will somehow come to a terrible end as an apostate and it is better to call it up to heaven now. Maybe there is a great lesson to be learned by those who love the baby that can be learned no other way.
If God illumines my mind with better answers, I will let you know. I do know that God does not think as we do or behave as we would wish Him to. His ways are not our ways. The story of Joseph in Genesis is a good example of how what is terrible in human terms—while it is happening—in God's ways it is a wonderful thing because it is the only way the story could have turned out as it did.
marinealways24- I see that I missed an earlier post from you. If we are alone in this universe—and I believe that we are but I am not certain—this should not make us arrogant. It should make us humble and grateful. Why would God make such an astoundingly enormous universe with life only in a little corner of it? To show us who He is as the Creator God. To display His creativity. When Rembrandt created a painting he wanted it to be the best he could come up with. God made an amazing universe here. I think we should give Him His props.
I certainly believe it is possible there could be life on other planets. I do not think we will ever be able to study every part of the universe. I know the search for extraterrestial life has been going on with ferver at great expense because we want to find evidence of it. Whoever finds it will have made the greatest discovery of ALL TIME. But I am struck by the fact we see nothing but hostile space, incapable of sustaining life except: this little blue ball with the absolutely perfect conditions for life to flourish. I am only asking folks to think it over.
issues veritas- Stalin and Mao did kill many religious people but to blame their actions on religion is illogical. You can blame it on their religion—Atheism! Besides, they also murdered millions for other reasons such as political dissent. Stalin killed many of his inner circle of other atheists just because he was a paranoid freak inhabited by a demon. Both of them starved millions to death just so they have less mouths to feed.
People are capable of incredible cruelty and evil; they are also capable of awesome goodness and mercy and love. I just don't see this as a defect. I see it as we have a wide, wide range of possible actions and we get to choose. If we choose evil that is not God's fault it is our own fault.
It is not my experience that people are "weighted" toward the bad. On the contrary, the vast majority of people I know—and I am blessed with many friends and acquaintances—are good people. Everybody misses the mark, of course.
I believe Scriptures are inspired by God. Perhaps Shakespeare was, too.
I didn't mean to skip over your brief mention of Angels. I believe in angels and demons. Apparently they have free will, too, and perhaps 2/3 of them choose to be on God's side so that means they were weighted towards the good by a 2 to 1 ratio.
Logic dictates a relationship on events like Hitler trying to expunge the religious element of Jews that threatened his power.
The fact the Angels are non human and are higher up on the scale, indicates design flaws in creation and therefore in the Creator.
I can see that you and I will continue to disagree without resolve.

Truly you are a man of great faith and your rewards are waiting for you. Those who choose to dispute Intelligent Design do so out of fear not knowledge. It is a sign of our free will yet they can not see it. If they employed pure logic in thier life they would living the way God had intended. There is no downside whatever in not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery or not having any other God. You can live and die believing and suffer no ill effects unless of course you count living in a perfect world for eternity an ill effect. Let them ponder but when their time comes they will call to Him.

first of all,time is variable because it is entwined in space.if time is variable there must be a beggining and an end.second,the argument for proof by design has been around for ever.it is an illusion brought about by lack of scientific observation and understanding of the evolution and addaptation of all things.third,it is the hight of arogance to humanize god in any fassion(why is god a he?).god by nature must be infinite,we are finite,these are mutualy exclusive and cannot comune without a bridge of some sort.the word that comes to mind is "hope"sustained by "faith"that our hope is accuarate.everything written by men is influenced by men and therefore suspect.how can the finite experience the infinite?,it is mathmaticaly impossible.so we are left with "hope" and "faith"....peace...

cheaptrick- Thank you for contributing to the conversation. No doubt time has a beginning and an end. The argument for design has been around since man began to write but I was mostly commenting on newer developments in science that bear out those ancient thinkers—not in contradiction to them as one might expect from a scientific community predisposed to be anti-God.
I call God a "He" because He does. Jesus said to address God as "Father" and I am willing to trust that Jesus—knowing what I do about the rest of his Character—knows what He is talking about better than I—or you.
You are right that a finite being cannot really know, or maybe even look at, an infinite being such as the God of all reality. I strive to learn as much about Him as I can in my lowly position. I think His personality is about the same as the personality of Jesus, and Him we know a fair amount about.
I applaude your article, James. Those trying to argue that science disproves the existence of God haven't fully considered the scientific facts you listed and deeply thought about the implications of them.

Actually I think much of the confusion comes from people who believe in god. You have basically one source for your beliefs, the bible, and you use it over and over again to prove that the bible is right. By quoting scripture and verse you ignore that simple fact that no book can prove itself to be the truth. Yes, you believe it is the truth, and that is great for you, but for the rest of us who seek knowledge, science holds a better chance of proving something either true or false. Is there any source besides your bible that gives proof for your beliefs, or is it all 100% bible based? If that is so, why should anyone believe you over Islam or any other religion? After all, they are all preaching the same basic premise: believe me because it is written here in this book.
Hello Ivan- Since I didn't quote any scripture in this post, this is a Red Herring, but I'll take the bait anyway.
You have sensed that the Bible is the primary source of my personal faith in God and that is true but it is far from the only source. There are also the hundreds of books I have read besides the Bible by Christian thinkers and writers written over a period of 2000 years, most of all of whom were exceptionally bright people who lived exemplary lives and were convinced of the Truth of the Message.
The martyrdoms of the 12 Apostles; the martyrdoms of countless Christians under Roman rule until Constantine; are a source of Faith for me. (You don't see people willing to be burned at the stake over fairy tales.) The persecutions and martyrdoms of Believers throughout History—of which I am a keen student as well—including today in Asia and Africa show me a belief system at least worth investigating thoroughly before I shut my mind to it. (And I am not referring to blowing up busses of women and children—those are murderers, not real martyrs. Real martyrs were killed for confessing their faith and refusing to recant it. Remember, these were real people, just like us, not fictional characters.)
Then are the books on philosophy that I have read written by virtually everybody who is considered important in that field including some atheists and of course, modern deconstructionists.
I have also studied other religions and they do not have the same meaning unless you are referring to basic morality written on most all human hearts (Common Law).
Then there is the community of Believers that I am an active part of in my daily walk and that gives the opportunity to see Faith played out on the battlefield of the soul rather than merely in books.
I also have an advantage many do not (these days) in that I grew up as a part of a large extended family of mostly strong Believers and I was able to learn from a young age why they believed what they did and how it affected their lives and even more—the lives of those around them. I also have witnessed the results in hundreds of lives of people I know who heard the Message but rejected it as you do—and have seen the effect the lost have had on those who tried to love them.
To cap it off, I have personally witnessed miracles and known prophets.
I am happy that you are so positive in your beliefs, but I have seen incidents where people die for cause that is not what they believe it to be. I am not here to tell you that I think you are wrong to believe what you believe, just to say that for me it makes little sense. The plural "you" is meant that christians and other people of other religions believe in their sacred books but most of the time, apart from anecdotal evidence have little else to prove to me that their beliefs are worth examining.
I appreciate the whole idea of faith, and I guess I was born without a faith gene because I need to know that something is true, or at least has a chance of being true, before I devote a portion of my few days of life to believing in it. In short, I have yet to see anything that convinces me, and simply believing it to be true is not good enough for me to accept the idea. I could just as easily believe in any of the Greek or Norse myths, but I don't give them much credence either.
So I am glad that you have the basis for your faith, but again, I just can't follow that path. and thanks for replying to the questions I posed. I am not trying to trick anyone, just to get replies to my questions. Thanks!

I really enjoyed reading this! I am an OR nurse, and each body is very different. Textbook rarely happens! Each one is different and unique. Not only nature proves that we are not random, but the human body proves it to me also. There is no way all of it could work so well together and be random. I am continually amazed at what people can overcome! I strongly believe we are here for a purpose! I do not really believe in coincidence. :)

It was a tremendously interesting article. I agree with k@ri so much. I am taking some course right now that I have to study Body Structure and Function class. I can't help wondering how perfect our body is created. Every little tiny part has a perfect task and function. The most amazing is our reproductive system. The whole genetic heritage, all genetic material is enclosed in a tiny tiny DNA molecule. What is it if not a miracle that God shows us?

"ONLY SCIENCE GIVES RELIABLE TRUTH"
This modern slogan seems reasonable at first. Many people think knowledge begins and ends with the scientific method. Anything else is mere opinion and unsubstantiated belief, a view sometimes called "scientism". However, those who hold this view will be surprised to know that it self-destructs.
Consider this dialog:
"I don't believe in Intelligent Design" (or God, or religion)
"Why not?"
"There is no scientific evidence for it."
"Then you shouldn't believe in science either."
"Why not?"
"Because there is no scientific evidence for it."
Therefore, to say that "Only science gives reliable truth" is a statement "about" truth that also purports to "be" true, in the same way that the statement "All English sentences are false" claims to be true.
As it turns out, this claim is not a fact "of" science. It is a philosophical assertion "about" science that itself cannot be proven by the scientific method and would therefore be unreliable.

Charles, yes that is truth. Because we know in John 1:1 that in the beginning was God and the Word (Jesus) was with God and the Word was God, we know that God SPOKE to create everything.

To those who believe that we somehow evolved from some slime, I have a question. Where did the slime come from?
I'm a practical thinker.I have a mechanical mind. I look at a chair. Somebody designed it and made it. That chair did not evolve from a tree on its own. There was a creator behind it.
The biblical account of creation makes sense. The problem is we humans are screwing it up.

James, wise words from a wise man who has strong faith and strong convictions. Stand firm. God is the Creator and man is the destroyer by God given free will. Only when we all choose to use our free will wisely, for the good that God intended will the self destruction we have begun here on earth change. first of all james i congrutulate u for this faboulous article u are descriptive as well as informative andur believe about god is great , but what will utell about this in hindu beliefs there are seven places createsd by god that aere yakshaloka, patallok,parilok means fairyland pichaslokmeans land of ghosts,bonalokmeans land of liliput and danavlokmeans land of demons and if earth is the only place where are this places recairnation is areality and people who have gone through past regression theraphy have experienced there past lifes, but ialso beleve that earth is aunique place burt what about multiuniverses and the theory of place and time isay that there are multiearths in the multiuniverses but they cant coorelate each other and the blackholes are the the paths to the other universes plz answer

This was interesting to me from the slant of considering Earth as the only planet providing a clear view of the universe. I am a firm believer in Scripture as the inspired Word of God and believe the Genesis account of creation to be the ONLY truth. Answers in Genesis and ICR etc have informed me in so many helpful ways as to the evidences for the Genesis account.
"It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out."
Proverbs 25:2
I like this verse for a number of reasons. But in terms of creation, i consider that God has indeed hidden MUCH from us, but yet given us the desire and the intelligence to discover much also. And with each new discovery HE IS GIVEN THE GLORY as He should be. Because even when those who do not believe, make new discoveries, HE is still glorified by those who love Him.
Looking from earth into the rest of the universe is certainly a 'searching things out'.
